Vagaries of Life

Hi everyone.
I have been truly disturbed for the last few days after having read an article in Femina. While this is strictly a women's magazine, I sneaked a dekko at it (which i usually do to probably have a little glance on some good looking women or read on the lifestyles of the rich and famous.) and read this article which moved me to tears.

I read about this financially challenged woman who poses nude at a plush South Bombay oops Mumbai (i would not want to court controversy cause limelight is not what I am looking at with my blogs :)) art college for a meager 100Rs a day. Now, as a reader yo could dismiss this saying non sense. Chance hi nahi hai!! Bull crap!!!. Agreed !!! No one poses nude for 100 bucks.

But for once assume that this is true. At least I felt so when i read that article. She has two growing mouths to feed and her own expenses to meet. She does this job because she has nothing else to do since being a housewife till she had her husband made her a handicap at developing skills.

She tried to make ends meet working as a maid which obviously did not help her meet them. Hence she was forced to take up this heinous profile. Once you go through the article, it describes the kind of embarrassment she goes through initially and how she has now resigned herself to fate.

The most important thing that really struck me damn hard was one particular part of this article. She had been having an off day when a peon came up to her and said some students had requested for her to come since they needed to finish their term assignments. She out of just a thought for the kids studying there gave up what she was doing and was all set to go back to work and pose nude for those kids so that they study well in life, grow in to famous artists and not compromise with their careers due to paucity of resources like she has had to do!! Man!! This to me is something that would make the most stone hearted guys cry!! I felt similar pain when i had read "life and times of Micheal Kay" and have rarely felt that sad and low. I mean look at this woman. Barely educated. Doing a downtrodden job, living in a lousy locality. Yet she has thoughts that would put beliefs of people from the elite to the dogs.

How often do you see such things. Education does make one better. But that solely depends on the person. It depends on how much you take off it. It depends on how much you apply. It depends on how good you are from within. Have seen loads of creme de la creme folks from swish business schools being absolute rogues not thinking a wee bit about the society. And at the same time, you see such people and really think that the world is and could be a much better place to be.

Ones emotional quotient is probably inversely proportional to the money one has. Atleast this holds true for most of the people that i have seen so far in todays times. Money may bring you an elite lifestyle but cannot buy values. We have a huge amount of people around us who could add value to society and lessen the grief of a lot of people like this lady in question so that she does not have to resort to such a preposterous calling. Alas!! everything does not happen the way we want it!! Such are the vagaries of life!!

  5. I canot agree more Harsh. The emotional quotient specially for ppl living in big cities is reaching a nadir. The day is not far when in cities we would be living like robotic morons.

  6. Hey Anupam. You are so right. We are moving to such sorry state of affairs. And I personally dont blame individuals. Surviving in a society full of such morons has made us attuned to such insensitivity. Thanks for reading the blog.

  7. Well....I am speechless.....Life is not meant to be easy...and its all about choices that we make in our life...There is no point feeling pity for anyone..that would be an insult to that persons sacrifice.People do strange things in life for survival as per there capabilities and opportunities that they are able to unearth for themselves . We should not forget that we are one of them only. I am yet to come across an individual who is not getting exploited in his/ her daily life for some or the other reason. We all compromise at some or the other point in life. NO REGRETS. In fact Harsh, i am of the opinion that since that lady has invested so much time of hers into this profession that she has chosen for herself, she should now take that to next level and if we have some ideas for her we should suggest her or align her with the right kind of people who can bring some perspective to her messed up life.Perhaps, this would help her in escalating herself to the next level. Please don't forget embarrassment was initial, now she is seasoned and can certainly be a part of professional art community. Its we who are feeling pity and crying after reading the story in femina, but she is not complaining as this has become a way of life for her. Her only apprehension being that this is not the permanent job and how her children would take it once they come to know about it. Well...some battles need to be fought alone only in life.

  9. Ankush. Thank you very much for your insightful feedback. The title vagaries of life becomes apt when you consider that this woman poses nude to make a living and gets paid peanuts. A Pam Anderson or a Lara Bingle does that for pleasure and is paid a bomb. People who have it flaunt it! Such my friend are the vagaris of life.

  10. Yeah absolutely true Harsh..i completely agree with you ...Thats the reason you would see in your daily life many times , that highly incompetent people working at quite senior positions in MNC's paid exorbitantly and much more capable and experienced people in partner community working for peanuts. Having said that, i would like to share with you one dialogue from film called COMPANY ( It was made on lives of Chotta Rajan and Dawood Ibrahim). This is what Dawood tells to Chotta Rajan's MOM, when she praises Dawood for being Godfather to her son.. " MAI IS DUNIYA MEIN KISI KEY SAR PEY KISI KA HAATH NAHEE HOTA, JO JIS KABIL HOTA HAI USEY MIL JATA HAI..". This is the reality my friend , this is the reality of our lives...You have to prove yourself at every stage in your life..as a professional, as a son, as a husband, as a father , as a grandfather...list is endless.
